Spring Cleaning: Beauty Edition

Now that it’s May and Spring is in full swing, a lot of us are looking to clean around the house. With shelter in place orders keeping us home, now is a great time to do some thorough organizing and consolidating of our beauty products. After years of collecting makeup samples, hair products, and other beauty items, it can be overwhelming to decide what’s worth keeping and what should be tossed. But by considering quality, expiration date, and how frequently you use a product, deciding whether or not to hold onto it can be a breeze!

When it comes to hair products, a good rule of thumb is to only hold onto as many products for in-shower use that can fit in your bathroom storage without becoming cluttered. Because the shower is the one place a lot of us truly get to enjoy “me-time,” keeping your system simple helps to keep showers relaxing and geared towards self-care. Most shampoos and conditioners display an expiration date on the bottom or side of the packaging, so be sure to double-check whether they’re still fresh before holding onto any half-empty bottles.

As far as hair sprays, dry shampoos, serums, and any other after-shower products are concerned, focus on how regularly you use them. Instead of filling your medicine cabinet with a variety of products, try searching for products that are multifunctional and good for regular use. Consider what your needs are and looking for products that will benefit your hair in more ways than one. For example, finding a volumizing spray that doubles as a heat protectant will make life much easier than having two separate products for these purposes!

For smaller beauty items like bobby pins, hair ties, and clips, try organizing them by keeping them in a catch-all dish or reserve a spot in a makeup organizer for them. Makeup organizers are a great tool for keeping your beauty products from overflowing. There are tons of options available at affordable prices. If you wear makeup often and keep a lot of it on hand, a compartmentalized organizer may be your best bet, but if your routine is more minimal, something simple, like a vanity tray, will work!

Makeup is often where we have the most excess, so start by getting rid of random samples, nearly empty containers, and expired products. Depending on how frequently and dramatically you do your makeup, try keeping a limited number of each item. You probably don’t need 5 mascaras or eyebrow pencils at once, so find your favorites and hold them close! One thing we do recommend having on hand is a makeup brush cleanser so that anything you use to apply makeup to your face is sanitary.

Investing in quality products that you’ll use up before they expire is important. Having items go to waste because you simply don’t need them is never fun, so staying organized and mindful is essential. Here are some favorites items amongst our experts at Riccardo Maggiore Salons…

Everyone has their favorite brushes for styling, but most forget to keep something in the shower.  We love the original WET brush. Otherwise, you can opt for a wide-tooth comb.

Right now, eyes are super important.  Since we are all wearing masks and most of your face is covered, you can focus on your eyes solely.

If you don't want to use your favorite eyeliner, you can try Sephora retractable eyeliner! It comes in waterproof and has a sponge tip on one side for a smokey look.  They have many different shades and even some with sparkle for a fun evening look.

For mascara, we like Telescopic by L'oreal or Thick and Fast Flash Extensions Effect mascara by Soap and Glory.  If you would like to try a splurge item, Better Than Sex by Too Faced is a cult favorite.

Don't forget your eyebrows! We love Archery 2-in-1 Brow by Soap and Glory.  It has a sculpting crayon on one side and a setting gel with a brush on the other. For a splurge, anything by Anastasia Beverly Hills is great.

Beauty routines are personal, so have fun and put thought into the products you invest in! We hope our organization tips help you to keep your items consolidated as you take on Spring Cleaning.
